EKET CHAIRMAN SUES FOR PEACE

 


... Re-enforces Ban on Scrap Metal Scavengers


The Chairman of Eket Local Government Mr. Akaniyene Tommey has called for peace and harmony in the Local Government.


The Council Boss stated this today during a visit to the family of the late Edikan Okon Edoho of Afaha Eket village who was gruesomely murdered in the early hours of Sunday March 20, 2021 by a scrap metal scavenger after a mild disagreement between the two. 


Consoling the bereaved family, Mr. Tommey sued for calm while also revealing that the mastermind of the unfortunate incident is cooling off in the police net after being apprehended by a combined search effort of men of the Police Force, Joint Military Task Force (JTF) operating in Eket and youths of the area, adding that the suspect will surely face the full wrath of the law.


Accompanied on the visit by the Youth Leader of Afaha Eket, Mr. Joseph Charles and that of the Hausa Community resident in Eket, Alhaji Ibrahim Iliya, the Council Chairman further called on all the youths of the area to avoid any act of retaliation as it will fuel the crisis further and also promised that he will do all within his powers to ensure there is no repeat of such act.


In a separate remark at the visit, the Youth Leader of the Hausa's living in Eket, Alhaji Ibrahim Iliya condemned the murder of Edikan Edoho by one of his Hausa brothers. He noted that the Hausas are peace loving people and having stayed for more than 31 years in Eket, he cannot support any form of violence in Eket Local Government by any of their subjects while also calling for the law to take its full course on the arrested culprit.


In a related development, the Council Chairman has announced a re-enforcment of the ban placed on the activities of scrap metal scavengers popularly known as "Iron Condemned" by the State Government.


In a release signed by the Council Secretary, Hon. Uso Hanson, anyone seen engaging in such activities will be duly arrested and handed over to the security agencies. He further called on people of the Local Government to stay calm and carry on with their routine activities as normalcy has been restored.
