GBV REFERAL CENTRE FOR IKSD READY FOR USE SOON

 


A state-of-the-art Sexual and Gender Based Referral Center for Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District would be ready for use soon. This is according to the State Gender Based Violence Management Committee chaired by the Wife of Akwa Ibom governor, Her Excellency, Dr. Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel.


Speaking shortly after inspecting the assigned facility at the Ikot Ekpene General Hospital donated by the State Ministry of Health, the wife of governor who was in company of members of the Committee, said the center would take care of victims of sexual and gender based assaults in the senatorial district.


The First Lady who inspected the offices, reception hall, open space and the surroundings, noted that the Center would complement that of Eket Senatorial district which has been in operation for a while, adding that another Center would also be established in Uyo to take care of the senatorial district.

The FEYReP boss while thanking the Commissioner for Health and the management of the Hospital for donating the Center, pointed out that the facility would be equipped to standard to meet the psychological needs of victims of gender based violence.

“Let me thank the Commissioner for Health and the management of this hospital for giving us this space to serve as a referral center for the senatorial district. I am happy because it would further help us in our work by reducing the number of people who go to Eket. This facility is for people from this area and very soon, we will equip it and open it for use,” Dr. Emmanuel said.

In their separate remarks, the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Professor Augustine Umoh, and the Chief Medical Director of Ikot Ekpene General Hospital, Dr. Nene Andem, said the center was donated to complement the enormous work of the Committee, saying it would add value to humanity.

They added that the advantage of having a referral center in the hospital was to aid treatment of victims of sexual assaults, saying with the ongoing renovation and equipping of the medical facility, victims would get first-hand medical and psychological support during their stay at the center.
