NIPSS TOURS AKWA IBOM STATE - Commends State Government On Mitigation Of Climate Change Effects.

 



Participants from National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, yesterday Monday, July 3, embarked on a study tour of Akwa Ibom State. The purpose of the tour was to assess the challenging issues arising from climate change and remediation steps taken by the State Government to address those challenges.


 During the tour, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals, Iquo Abia Esq, played a very effective role as she led the delegation on tour of major flood control sites across the State.


The Permanent Secretary, Abia, accompanied by some management staff of the Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals, in her remarks, identified flooding as constituting a serious concern to the government and people of the State, and practically sensitized the participants on the potent measures advanced by Akwa Ibom State Government to check the flooding menace via underground interconnected drainages and pipe-jacking integrated flood-control system.


Some of the major drainages visited included: Ikpa Road drainage, Uyo Village Road drainage, Ibrahim Babangida - Mbiakot drainage which traverses 17 villages across 3 Local Government Areas (Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan and Nsit Ibom LGAs) and Urua Udofia drainage, off Nwaniba Road, Uyo.


At the end of the tour, the NIPSS participants were satisfied with what they described as Government's genuine effort at mitigating the effects of climate change, particularly in the area of flood control.


Meanwhile, Prof. Pam Dunsha - led delegation from National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, currently embarking on study tour of the State, with the theme, " Industrialization, Climate Change and Energy Security in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Prospects", is billed to pay a study visit to the Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals on Friday July 7, 2023 for climate change-related discourse and interactive engagements.
