***As A'Ibom governor's wife harps on Proper Parenting
The Oron Civic center earlier today October 21, 2022, was filled to capacity as Oro women under the auspices of Oron Union Women’s Wing, adorned in their colorful attires celebrated the 1st ever 2022 International Women’s Conference with the theme, “Empowering and Educating the Oro Girl Child for 21st Century”.
The highly attended event which drew Oro sons and daughters from far and near had in attendance the wife of the Akwa Ibom State governor, Her Excellency Dr. Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel who was accompanied by the wife of the Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial standard bearer, Mrs. Patience Umo Eno and the Honorable Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet.
Speaking at the epochal event, the wife of governor congratulated the women for making the celebration a worthwhile experience, saying the content of the event has demonstrated the style and commitment of the Union to the welfare of the girl-child /women in the society.
The First Lady while commending the women for their love and unity, acknowledged the foresight of the organizers in the planning and execution of the event, stating that it has promoted unity and togetherness in the land.
Mrs. Emmanuel speaking further took out time to address the women on their roles as caregivers in the family. She noted that mothers are custodians of family ethos; hence, they must not abdicate their primary assignment in the upbringing of the child.
“As we are gathering here today, let me use this opportunity to remind the women of their role in the family unit. Many of us have failed in our duties as caregivers and this we must correct.
“Inculcate in your children good moral values. Watch over their actions; ensure they are in school during school hours and take advantage of the free and compulsory education. Many of our young children have derailed into drugs and promiscuity.”
The governor’s wife in her altruistic manner used the occasion to empower a cross section of women of Oro extraction with cash and charged them to utilize it well.
Earlier in her address, the International President of the group, Mrs. Stella Kargbo who was ably represented at the event, said that within ten months of steering the ship of the organization, she has dared to make a difference with the support of the mother body led by Bishop Etim Ante.
While noting that the theme of the conference was coined to reflect the plight of an average girl child in the contemporary society and her attendant limitations, added that within a short period in office, she has embarked on sensitization of female and male students across secondary schools in Oro Nation against anti-social behaviors like rape, premarital sex, cultism, smoking, and drugging.
Also speaking, the Chairman on the Occasion, Barr. Asuquo highlighted different customs and traditions that have impeded women from breaking biases, saying that all the obnoxious practices against women must henceforth stop. He called on women to support each other to break the glass ceiling, adding that women must be encouraged by all to achieve their set goals in life.
Other speakers at the event were the PDP deputy governorship candidate, Senator Akon Eyakenyie, the International President General of Oro Union, His Lordship Bishop Etim Ante who earlier proclaimed the event open.
The event which featured cultural displays and award of excellence to deserving daughters of the area also saw the unveiling of the book entitled “Usi Mmani Oro.”
